Oscar, the cat who predicts people’s death, accompanies an old man through his last journey, acting as a psychopomp guide in a dance macabre which reunites Billy with his ideal image of himself.
On a larger scale, the cat Oscar functions as a substitute of Oscar the boy but it also represents one of the archetypes which characterise Oscar (the boy). The cat is then a part of the boy and can act in his absence to represent him, or can be seen as a resonance of his personality, if it is with him. Oscar the boy also uses the image of the cat as a symbol of himself.
